This article is for people who are just starting SEO or Search Engine Optimization and want to learn what it is all about. SEO is about optimizing your site for search engines. This means creating relevant pages and getting relevant inbound links for the search term you want to rank in search engines for. There are all kinds if things that go into SEO form the title of your page, to the H1 tags, to the footer links at the bottom of your page. SEO is not just about what you do to your website. That is called on page SEO. There is also off page SEO. This has to do with backlinks or when people link to your site and the text of the backlinks.
How do I get backlinks?
There are three main ways that you get links to your site.
1. People love your content so much that they decide to link to it just because they like it. This is the best kind of inbound link.
2. Link exchanges. This means you and another site decide to link to each other for free. Google does not like 2 way links or reciprocal links as much as one that only goes to your site.
3. Paid links. This is when you contact someone that owns a site and pay them an amount per month or year to have a link on their site to yours.
There are other ways of getting backlinks such as putting links in you signature on forums but the three I described are used the most.
The main thing to remember when getting inbound links is to make sure they are from sites related to yours and the hyperlink text is relevant to your site. It is also good to have links from all different page ranks. Variety is the key here.
